Jason completed his BA in Psychology at Wesleyan University in 2015 and is now pursuing his PhD in Informatics at the University of California, Irvine working with Dr. Constance Steinkuehler in the Connected Learning Lab. His dissertation is exploring how teams can strategically communicate through technology to manage awareness, attention, and decision-making under pressure.
Through his current work observing elite esports players, he aims to describe how systematically distributing information through a team can support tight coordination in the face of stressful events. Jason also studies developing teams to investigate how these teamwork skills can be trained and learned. As a student chair of the UCI Esports Research Conference in 2019 and 2020 he is bringing together scientists, practitioners, and industry folk to foster collaboration and rigorous research in esports’ nascency. Jason has tons of fun talking about the connections he sees between teams of competitive gamers, air traffic controllers, emergency room nurses, and motorsport pit crews.
